Roots and Records Challenge
ROOTS & RECORDS CHALLENGE — Registration Now Open!
This January, the Kansas Oil Museum is launching a brand-new community tradition, and you’re invited to be part of the very first year. The Roots & Records Challenge is all about celebrating Butler County through service, storytelling, and community involvement.
Participants choose one of two paths:
1. Volunteer Path
Complete 10 volunteer hours at the museum in January. Opportunities include helping with events, supporting school programs, cleaning and caring for historic buildings, assisting with tours, organizing collections, and more.
2. Story Path
Submit a 3–5 page research paper or story (fiction or nonfiction) that connects in some meaningful way to Butler County’s history, people, or landscape.
It’s just $25 to join, and everyone who completes the challenge will receive an exclusive museum T-shirt designed for this event.
The top 7 stories and top 5 volunteers will be featured in our first-ever Roots & Records booklet, which will be available for purchase in the Museum Gift Shop.
Make your mark. Tell our story. Help preserve the history that makes Butler County unique.
*Deadline to enter is January 3, 2026. Challenge must be completed by January 31, 2026 to win the shirt and be entered into the contest to have your story published.
