Thu., May 24, 6:00pm: "Disaster! Fire, Storm, & Other Catastrophes on the Early Oilfields"
Life in the early oilfields was not for the faint of heart. This talk will explore the many hazards of this line of work, starting with the very first disasters at the very first oil wells in Pennsylvania, and highlighting some of the more infamous calamities in Butler County and surrounding areas in Kansas from the 1910s through the early '20s. It concludes with a brief discussion of how these early disasters spurred advances in oilfield construction and technology along with changes in safety and first aid practices.
